Experience Claire Barclay's 'Shifting Ground' at the Camden Arts Centre

barclay.jpgClaire Barclay's new sculptural installation is partly inspired by the physical nature of the gallery. It responds to the architectural features, the light and context of Camden Arts Centre as a place for the production and reception of fine art and craft.

Barclay took part in the 'Early One Morning' exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2002 that heralded a new generation of sculptors. Here she is given free rein to pursue her pure pleasure in the process of making.

Her sensitive configurations of different sculpted objects create dynamic juxtapositions of industrial methods and handcrafted items. At Camden Arts Centre she uses materials such as clay, wood, straw and metal.

Barclay challenges our attitudes to 'craft' - by employing traditional techniques associated with alternative lifestyle cultures and non-fine art practices, she questions the marginalisation of some crafts and their commodification.

The exhibition runs from Friday May 2nd to Sunday June 29th.  The Camden Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm and 9pm on Wednesdays.
