Hollywood And Indie Cinema - Roxy Bar And Screen April 2008
Head down to the Roxy Cinema this April for some fantastic free films
BAD NEWS FROM THE ROXY - "Sadly, there really isn't such a thing as a free lunch in this town, and the bad news is that despite protests we've been forced to change our film license. All the documentary / shorts nights will remain unaffected, but the Sunday screenings and the Recent Release screenings are now a lot more expensive for us to run, so we are being forced to trial a £3 cover charge to cover some of the costs of the films on these days.
"How this will work is that when you buy food / drink, a £3 cover charge will be added to your bill for the screening and you will be given a receipt to show you've paid this. You will only need to pay this once on any day - so on Sundays you will still be getting 3 films for the princely sum of £3. This is regrettable, but unfortunately we aren't left with any other choice. There is one bit of good news though, which is that it does widen the choice of films we can play, so expect to see more classics that we haven't been able to show until now.
"We're currently trialling this system which we hope will work out - any thoughts or feedback gladly welcome, and feel free too to send any screening suggestions and we'll be happy to screen the most popular requests."
Almost every day you can catch a classic or independent film at the most relaxed cinema in town located on Borough High Street. View the screen from a comfy armchair or on a larger table with a group of friends. You can also eat and drink at the Roxy...what more could you ask for?

George Kuchar: 100% Pure Beef Unleashed! - Weather Diary 3 (1988), Metropolitan Monologues (2000), The Stench of Satan (2000) - A night of short video work by underground film legend George Kuchar. Famed for his early outré melodramas with unforgettable titles like Hold Me While I'm Naked and Pussy on a Hot Tin Roof, Kuchar was adopted as a hipster court jester by the 60s Avant Garde film crowd. These 8mm and 16mm experimental gems influenced a generation of campy outsiders, the most notable being John Waters who has never sought to hide his debt.
Sunday 6th - 2pm, 5pm, 8pm
Sunday Cinema - Debut Directors - Truly, Madly, Deeply (Minghella, 90), Shallow Grave (Boyle, 94), Withnail & I (Robinson, 86) - After a bunch of arty stuff and documentaries, we return to some proper cult classics for today, starting with a tribute to Anthony Minghella in our triple-bill of great debut films from British directors.

Sunday Cinema - Train Films - The General, Strangers on a Train, Trainspotting - The General named after the central steam locomotive. Then, one of Hitchcock's finest and most popular early films, Strangers on a Train, with the classic double-murder set-up. Another masterpiece of filmmaking, and one which gives even more on repeat viewings. And to finish, Trainspotting, one of the defining British movies of the 90's.
Monday 21st - 8pm
Recent Releases - The Darjeeling Limited - More weird and wonderful filmmaking from one of the most original filmmakers getting widely distributed at the moment, Wes Anderson. Here, Adrian Brody digs out his deadpan face to join longtime Anderson collaborators Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman as three brothers on a 'bonding' train journey across India.
