One of Britain's most prestigious art prizes, the BP Portrait Award, at the National Portrait Gallery, has this year received record numbers of entries from non-UK artists and those over the age of 40.

The four artists shortlisted for the 2008 award are: Simon Davis for Portrait of Amanda Smith at Vincent Avenue; Peiyuan Jiang for Untitled; Robert O'Brien for Hannah O'Brien and Craig Wylie for K.

In addition to a cash prize of £25,000, the winner of the BP Portrait Award will receive a commission worth £4,000. The second prize will be £8,000 and third £6,000.

There is, also for the second time, a BP Young Artist Award of £5,000 for the work of an entrant aged between 18 and 30. Both Peiyuan Jiang and Robert O'Brien are eligible for this award of £5,000.

The exhibition of works runs from Thursday June 12th to Sunday September 14th, the awards ceremony will take place on Monday June 16th.
