Transitions

Transitions is a project created by the Camden Arts Centre in partnership with the primary schools of the borough of Camden.

Transitions is designed to assist children during the challenging move from primary to secondary school. This exciting and innovative three-year project explores the experience of change and eases the transition.

In the summer term of 2007 artists Abigail Hunt, Othello De'Souza Hartley and Stephen Connolly worked with pupils during their final year of primary school to explore the concept of transition, and their feelings and expectations around their imminent move to secondary school.

In the autumn term, building on a series of creative and discursive workshops constructed around the forms and practices of contemporary art, the artists moved with the pupils to take up residencies at Hampstead School in their first term of Year seven.

During the residencies the artists each took a different approach to developing the theme of transition: Abigail worked with students to collect found and ephemeral objects to be transformed into delicate cut paper installations; Othello worked with pupils, ex-students and staff to consider their aspirations for their time at school; Stephen explored the different sonic currents contained within the framework of the school as an institution.

During the spring term the artists will go back into the school's Art Department to work with Year seven pupils to develop their own artwork in response to the project.

The creative work produced will be show during a special exhibition taking place at the Camden Arts Centre from Wednesday May 21st to Sunday May 25th.

The Camden Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm and 9pm on Wednesdays.
