Beggars'Banquet
Take a look at Cathy Hart and Esther Jervis' collaborative art show at the House Gallery in Camberwell
Head down to the House Gallery in Camberwell for an evolving exhibition...
Esther Jervis and Cathy Hart are spending 2 weeks in the House Gallery working collaboratively within their sculptural practices to create 'guests' for a banquet.
They are bringing in old, discarded pieces to re-make alongside new unfinished sculpture. Materials they plan to use will include wire, plaster, paint and fabric. Both artists will be working and responding to each others sculpture and interweaving their own materials and forms into the collaborative process to achieve a fresh outcome.
Experimenting and fusing work together is new as both artists are challenging their work forwards towards unknown territory. The gallery environment will be transformed by the banquet guests.
The title Beggars' Banquet came about as Esther and Cathy both deal with archetypal themes in their work making references to myths and fairytales. They create awkward looking creatures with ambiguous features that can be at the same time vulnerable and menacing.
These other worldly characters appear to be outside our experience yet imbued with human qualities. The playful nature of their sculptures invites the viewer to imagine and create interpretations of their own.
Over the course of 2 weeks the artists will develop the work, building on each others interventions and documenting the changes as metamorphosis takes place.
The exhibition runs from Monday September 1st to Saturday September 13th and is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
