See the stars who come to watch themselves in the UK premiere of the Changeling in Leicester Square

changeling3_main.jpgThe Changeling UK premiere is on Sunday 16th November 2008 in the Empire Leicester Square.

Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby) directs Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider, Mr and Mrs Smith) and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich, Burn After Reading) in the Changeling.

Changeling tells the true story of a mother Christine (Jolie, of course) whose kidnapped son is apparently returned to her, only after the press frenzy has died down she realises he is not who she thought he was...

It's 1928 in Los Angeles and Christine Collins is about to find out how the authorities do their jobs in the time of Prohibition with the help of activist Reverend Briegleb (Malkovich).

Michelle Martin, Jan Devereaux, Gattlin Griffith, and Michael Kelly (Sopranos) also star.

Nobody knows who will show for any premiere, but we all know how these thespians love to dress up and watch themselves on screen.

You are advised to arrive in the afternoon to get a good view to the stars and their significant others walk the walk to the Changeling premiere. If you find you have time on your hands then there's plenty of free stuff to do in the area such as The National Gallery and Covent Garden.

Enjoy a free gig from DIE! DIE! DIE! at the Rough Trade East store this August

die.jpgGet down to the Rough Trade East store this summer for a whole load of free instore gigs.

If the name didn't tip you off, Die! Die! Die! have little patience for pop concessions. Abrasive & bare-bones, the band makes a lot out of a little - in love with a loud /soft dynamic.

Their eardrum-rattling clatter recalls the rollicking franticness of the Liars & the nervous jerkiness of Hot Hot Heat. One of the best bands to emerge from New Zealand in over a decade.

DIE! DIE! DIE! Will be doing their thing on Saturday August 2nd from 6pm.

Enjoy 'Sights from a Steeple' a new exhibition from IBID PROJECTS

ibid.jpgIBID PROJECTS is pleased to present 'Sights from a Steeple', a group show of six international artists.

Each of whose work deals with issues such as a romance that has failed, a Poe-esque approach to the subject of the night or attitudes of austerity and self-restraint.

The exhibition takes its title from the chapter of a book by the Nineteenth-century novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Each story in the book had previously been published or told before. In the chapter 'Sights from a Steeple', an all-seeing narrator surveys the world around him from the heights of a church tower. His reflections create a sense of dizzying vertigo but also relay a sense of liberation that can come from looking at an environment from a distance, whereby the past and future can be seen together in one moment.

In a similar way, many of the artists in the exhibition can appear forward-looking in their vision whilst equally sharing a fascination for pre-Modernist canons. Through multiple references from Post-punk music to Nineteenth century literature and scientific photography, each have found similar possibilities in the past in the way that music groups such as The Cure or Joy Division explored Nineteenth century links between disaster and romance, and saw them as closely related; or, looked at recent subcultures that are still somehow unknown or have already been claimed by others.

The exhibition runs from Saturday July 5th until Sunday August 24th. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

Sessions generally start with a question. Someone who has some relevant expertise gives a very brief, informal talk. After that a discussion develops in a free and unstructured manner. It's not a lecture, and it's not a debate; it's a pub argument, but unlike any you've had before.

On Tuesday November 25th from 7.30pm, you can enjoy a talk and discussion about football, loyalty and identity led by Dave Boyle. As well as appearing on national television, radio and at academic conferences, he is Chief Executive of Supporters Direct, a group that aims "to deliver responsible, democratic representation at football clubs".

Dr Glendinning is Director of the Forum for European Philosophy at the European Institute, part of the London School of Economics, and is the author of numerous books and papers about the European philosophical tradition.

Wilfrid Hodges will ask us "Is Being Rational The Same As Being Logical?". Prof Hodges is Professorial Fellow in the maths department of Queen Mary College. He's made a huge number of contributions to both algebra and logic and is the author of one of the most popular introductions to Model Theory.

He has a keen interest in the historical and cultural aspects of his discipline as well as the technicalities and will be starting off, we're told, from an argument due to C.S. Peirce that logic and reason are the same thing. No mathematical knowledge required, although those with some will enjoy filling in the details.

Explore the world of Brazilian street art with ocontemporary at Gallery 27

tinho.jpgocontemporary is proud to present Looking For Myself, an exciting new solo exhibition and installation by celebrated Brazilian street art pioneer Tinho at Gallery 27

Tinho, 33 years old, developed his passion for graffiti growing up amidst the unique atmosphere of São Paulo, Brazil's street art capital. His early love for drawing was later influenced by skateboarding, punk and hip-hop, which then led to the underground cultures of graffiti.

Intensely vibrant and emotive, Tinho's innate ability to paint emotion and the human condition inspires an unparalleled reaction to his work. He describes himself as an artist who 'understands the soul of his age and tries to translate it into art', using characters and scenarios to huge sensitivity in his paintings to do this.

Having long boasted a particularly rich and diverse urban art scene, Brazil's uniquely colourful and exciting approach to street art has, in a short time, propelled it to the very forefront of the global Graffiti movement.

This exciting new exhibition is taking place from Wednesday July 23rd to Sunday August 3rd. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

Take a look at Cathy Hart and Esther Jervis' collaborative art show at the House Gallery in Camberwell

house.jpgHead down to the House Gallery in Camberwell for an evolving exhibition...

Esther Jervis and Cathy Hart are spending 2 weeks in the House Gallery working collaboratively within their sculptural practices to create 'guests' for a banquet.

They are bringing in old, discarded pieces to re-make alongside new unfinished sculpture. Materials they plan to use will include wire, plaster, paint and fabric. Both artists will be working and responding to each others sculpture and interweaving their own materials and forms into the collaborative process to achieve a fresh outcome.

Experimenting and fusing work together is new as both artists are challenging their work forwards towards unknown territory. The gallery environment will be transformed by the banquet guests.

The title Beggars' Banquet came about as Esther and Cathy both deal with archetypal themes in their work making references to myths and fairytales. They create awkward looking creatures with ambiguous features that can be at the same time vulnerable and menacing.

These other worldly characters appear to be outside our experience yet imbued with human qualities. The playful nature of their sculptures invites the viewer to imagine and create interpretations of their own.

Over the course of 2 weeks the artists will develop the work, building on each others interventions and documenting the changes as metamorphosis takes place.

The exhibition runs from Monday September 1st to Saturday September 13th and is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

bern2.jpgEnjoy a fantastic free photography exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery this summer.

A new display at the National Portrait Gallery will show a selection of one of the biggest-ever gifts to the Gallery, 140 of the most iconic photographs of famous 20th century British subjects.

The photographs are by Bern Schwartz (1914-1978), a Californian who turned to photography in his early sixties after a successful career in business. Taken between 1975 and 1978 they include portraits of Margaret Thatcher, Rudolf Nureyev, John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Lord Denning, the Prince of Wales, A J Ayer, Tony Benn, Zandra Rhodes and Twiggy.

The gift presented by the Bernard Lee Schwartz Foundation comprises portraits of some of the most prominent figures from British life in the late 1970s, including actors, politicians, artists, academics and royalty. The portraits often capture the subjects in surroundings reflecting their personality, life and work. Henry Moore is pictured in his studio with his sculpture, Peggy Ashcroft is shown in front of Walter Sickert's portrait of her in Venice, Margot Fonteyn sits by her painted portrait by Pietro Annigoni, John Gielgud is at home in his Buckinghamshire villa, while David Hockney is seen in his studio with his self-portrait and painting, My Parents.

The exhibition runs from Friday July 11th to Sunday January 4th. The National Portrait Gallery is open daily form 10am to 6pm and to 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

Enjoy the delight of the 2008 Summer Exhibition at the SaLon Gallery

salon.jpgDo not miss your chance to see SaLon SUMMER 2008 Show, deemed to be one of the most thought provoking art shows seen for some time.

The exhibition showcases emerging, innovative artwork from London's SaLon Gallery's annual hunt for the UK's most talented graduates from the London's most prominent art schools such as The Royal Academy of Arts, RCA, Goldsmiths, Chelsea, Central St Martin's, Slade, Camberwell, Wimbledon, City & Guilds and Kingston.

Through the use of traditional methods and materials, the selected artists explore a new attitude; a bias that may evolve into a generational and much awaited new 'British' sensibility. This resilient insight reflects the cosmopolitan cross-population and global system of jet-setting foreign art school attendees, where several nationalities, side by side with a long established immigrant and local populae, matriculate to train at today's most elite British Schools.

This new cultural hybrid, which in itself may invigorate, muddle, mix or surprise, vests the real revelation that this exhibition contains.  Will each graduate bring a dash of freshness, influencing the locals and vice-versa or will it all, under market and peer pressure, produce a bland, easily marketable multicultural product? The show will both attest to and test these educational premises.

SaLon Gallery's intention to present 'UK's 'Future Greats' is not without an element of vindication.  It aims to measure, with the rigor of an exhibition, and present these manifestations of the zeitgeist which, is so clearly and inevitably influenced by the marketplace. This show will also serve as a barometer of the increasingly globalized institution and thus, our local academic art sphere- by now so systematized into serving the 'establishment'- by analogy, be brought into question.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday July 23rd to Sunday September 7th. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 7pm.

Head down to the RAF Museum for a fab free exhibition on the Trailblazers of the sky

_Blazers logo sm.jpgMany people identify the Golden Age of aviation as the period between the two World Wars, a time when young men and women sought thrills, danger and, ultimately, international recognition through trailblazing aviation exploits that set the world alight.

This small group of pioneers were the first to conquer oceans and seas or just the physical and mental demands of long distance flying, without the comfort of the modern technologies that we take for granted today, making their achievements, for many, even more wondrous.

In this the Centenary Year of British Powered Flight, the Royal Air Force Museum has decided to honour this band of intrepid aviators with a free six month exhibition. 'Trailblazers' focuses on four individuals whose courage, grit and determination captured the world's imagination during the 1920s and 30s.

Those featured in the exhibition include Alex Henshaw, Amy Johnson, Francis Chichester, Charles Lindbergh and many more.

The aim of 'Trailblazers' will be to re-introduce these pioneers, their achievements and aircraft associated with them to a new generation of young explorers in the appropriately named Milestones of Flight Hall at the Museum's London site.

The exhibition runs from Saturday May 31st to Wednesday December 31st. The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm.

Celebrate Peruvian Independance Day with Pure Peru on Brick Lane!

pureperu.jpgThis year Peruvian Independence Day will be celebrated during a special one-day event 'Pure Peru'.

Commemorating the 187th anniversary of the South American country's independence which falls on the 28th July, the 'Cusqueña Pure Peru festival represents a boon for would-be 'lonely-planeteers' and culture-vultures across the country many of whom will get their very first introduction to a country packed full of mystique and wonder right on their very doorstep.

Taking over East London's iconic Vibe Bar on Brick Lane on Sunday 27th July from 3pm to 11pm, Cusqueña's Pure Peru festival is a day long affair designed to give people a fun, cultural insight into one of the most fascinating countries on Earth. From the world wonder Machu Picchu to the bustling, artistic epicenter that makes up the country's capital Lima, Peru's many wonders have, up until now, remained strong in the hearts of the some 5,000 Peruvian natives that currently reside in London, but very little further.

Visitors to Brick Lane can expect to feast on fantastic Peruvian food, enjoy family arts and crafts and listen to three forms of Peruvian music, both modern and traditional. During the day, Afro Caribbean drums and bass will sit alongside the familiar sound of Andean jungle pan-pipes, complemented later by the unique sound of traditional Peruvian coastal music. See why Copenhagen, Denmark has been named the world's Best City

sustainable.jpgSee why Copenhagen, Denmark has been named home to not only the world's Best City - according to Monocle, July/August 2008 - but also the world's Best Design City.

The future of architecture is on display at the Danish Embassy this summer as 18 Danish firms present sustainable new technologies and designs that will contribute to solving the global architectural challenges of the 21st century.

Curated by a specialist in the field of sustainable architecture, Danish architect Vibeke Grupe Larsen, and housed in an innovative, fully reusable and ultimately recyclable, totally cardboard and paper display by Hemingway Design / Wildcard Creative, the projects are presented through models as well as virtual means at the Danish Embassy, itself of great architectural interest as it is the last building designed by Arne Jacobsen.

sust-DANE-able is generating considerable interest and is guaranteed to be one of the hits of this exciting architectural summer season. Exhibition designer Wayne Hemingway highlights that: "This exhibition takes us to places that we all should go, inside the thinking of 18 Danish architectural practices, which demonstrate how social, economic and environmental sustainability is being addressed by the most forward thinking architects now at work. It's not hard to
understand why we called this exhibition sust-DANE-able."

The exhibition runs at the Danish Embassy from June 21st to July 12th and is open Tuesday to Friday from 3pm to 7pm and Saturday from 12pm to 4pm.

Please visit the official website to find out more and register to visit the exhibition!

Line the red carpet as the stars of WALL E descend on Leicester Square

walle_main.jpgBrand new animated film 'WALL E' is set to take the movie charts by storm this summer and you can be lining the red carpet for its UK premiere.

After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was bult for, Wall E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose I life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE.

EVE comes to realise that WALL E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planets future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home).

Meanwhile WALL E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets in motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen.

Fred Willard, Jeff Garlin and Ben Burtt star in the film.

The UK premiere takes place in Leicester Square on Sunday July 13th; you can't watch the film just yet, so don't be trying to get into the cinema without an invitation, but crowds tend to gather around the red carpet from 12pm with the stars arriving at 4pm.

Enjoy free films at the Roxy Cinema every month thanks to Second Run!

deaf.jpgHead down to the Roxy Bar and Screen on Borough Hight Street on the second Monday of every month for a new season of free screenings.

Featuring award-winning films such as 'Black Sun' and 'David Holzman's Diary' and early films from the likes of Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Milos Forman, this is a great chance to see a selection of Second Run titles on the big screen in the comfortable surroundings of Roxy.

Starting on Monday 14th July, enjoy a unique evening of dinner, drinks and a movie with Nicolas Philibert's wonderfully elegant documentary 'In the Land of the Deaf' introduced by Second Run's Mehelli Modi.

Check out the listings below...

Monday 14th July 8pm
In the Land of the Deaf (Le pays des sourds)
A film by Nicolas Philibert
1992 99 mins
The films and methods of Nicolas Philibert, maker of Etre et Avoir and Back to Normandy, have shown him to be one of contemporary cinema's most acclaimed documentarians. In The Land of the Deaf is an elegantly spare and thoughtful portrait of the rich, diverse, but often isolated culture of the deaf community.
Introduced by Second Run's Mehelli Modi

Monday 11th August  7.30pm
Blissfully Yours (Sud sanaeha)
A film by Apichatpong Weerasethakul
2002 122 mins

From the director of Tropical Malady. Innovative and enigmatic, Blissfully Yours is a languid celebration of the pleasures of the moment. In  Apichatpong's heady, sensual and playful film, a leisurely road trip and a picnic in the jungle give way to uninhibited emotion and eroticism. A meditation on happiness, superstition, politics and sexuality, Blissfully Yours confirms the reputation of one of the most distinctive new filmmakers in world cinema.
The screening will be introduced by a special guest speaker TBC.

Monday 8th September  8pm
Audition/Talent Competition (Konkurs)
A film by Milos Forman
B&W 1963 79 mins

Milos Forman's debut film launched what became known as the Czech New Wave. Made as two separate 'featurettes', but the style and themes were very similar and they were released as one film. KONKURS is important as the debut film of Mirolslav Ondricek (cinematographer of 'If' and 'Amadeus') and Ivan Passer (director of 'Intimate Lighting' and 'Cutter's Way') as well as the first work of a world-renowned director clearly showing the beginnings of the style and pre-occupations prominent in many of Forman's subsequently acclaimed films including 'Loves of a Blonde', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Amadeus'.
The screening will be introduced by a special guest speaker TBC.

Give your mind a workout this summer at the Brain Gym

braingym.jpgTrain your brain this summer with London's Brain Gym!

In today's fast-paced world, maintaining physical fitness is no longer enough - being mentally fit is absolutely key to achieving peak performance. Through various exercises based on scientific findings and regular mental hydration, the brain can be trained to function at an optimal level.

The drench brain gym, the first of it's kind in the UK, is coming to London to show the public the benefits of regularly exercising the brain and keeping it mentally hydrated.

The drench brain gym will be hosted by our very own brain trainer, Dr. Jack Lewis (PhD),  an energetic and enthusiastic neuroscientist determined to unravel the mysteries of the human brain. Dr. Jack has put together the 'drench brainaerobics' programme, specifically designed to improve the public's alertness, concentration and short-term memory through a series of fun and interactive activies including:

Visitors will have a chance to experience a dance lesson with the legendary dancer behind Brains' slick moves in the recent drench advert. Memorising and imitating a sequence of challenging dance moves gets 'mirror' neurons firing (brain cells that are both active when you observe someone performing a skilled motor task and when you perform it yourself). This action helps to improve the process of converting demonstrations of how to do tasks given by peers, parents, teachers, etc, into movements.

In addition to this visitors to the Gym can enjoy a Giant Buzz Wire and Generation Game Conveyer Belt.

The Brain Gym is taking place at La Galleria on Pall Mall on Wednesday 16th, Thursday 17th and Friday 18th July between 10am and 5pm.

To avoid disappointment, the public is advised to email drenchbraingym@frankpr.it to book a free 'drench brainaerobics session' giving their 1st, 2nd and 3rd preferred hour long time slot, between 10am-4pm

Supported by a programme of artist's talks, the exhibition will highlight the necessity for art as a means of communication, expression, and release, as well as its importance to one's general wellbeing and happiness.

A specially curated exhibition of works from Paintings in Hospitals' collection presents the evidence, arguments and processes for having art in healthcare facilities. During the exhibition, various artist talks will explore how art and having access to art can speed up a patient's recovery, reduce drug consumption, act as a distraction, enable communication and act as a vehicle for therapy.

Adam Hahn & Professor Pete Coffey is Director of the London Project to Cure Blindness, Institute of Ophthalmology, will talk about Hahn's paintings that documents and explores what is seen by people with Macular Degeneration, an eye condition affecting the centre of the vision. Created from the perspective of a person with this condition, these paintings engage the viewer in trying to understand how other people see.

Speakers throughout the exhibiton include John D Edwards, an artist who has created a body of work in response to a life threatening form of cancer. Discover London's buried bones at the Wellcome Collection this summer

skeletons_main.jpgFind out about the bones underneath our feet at a special exhibition from the Wellcome Collection.

As Londoners go about their busy lives, little do they imagine that they are walking over the bones of generations of their predecessors.

Excavations required for the continuous redevelopment of London have revealed a subterranean city of skeletons hidden beneath our streets. Burial grounds have been uncovered right across the city - sometimes beneath familiar landmarks, sometimes in the most banal of locations.

Drawn from the Museum of London's astonishing collection of 17 000 skeletons spanning 16 centuries, this exhibition examines the bones of some of those who lived, died and were buried beneath our city.

Their skeletons reflect London's rich past and varied social geography - from the affluent district of Chelsea to the Cross Bones cemetery in Southwark, believed to have been established originally as a graveyard for 'single women' (a euphemism for prostitutes).

Redevelopments in the 1980s around Smithfield Market uncovered the East Smithfield Black Plague pits, where the dead were stacked five deep in mass graves, while the burial grounds of an Augustinian monastery were uncovered during the construction of an extension to a supermarket car park in Merton.

Through careful forensic analysis by the team at the Museum of London, each skeleton reveals its own story, allowing us fascinating insights into the times in which they lived and the health hazards of the day - from syphilis to smallpox and rickets.

The exhibition runs from 23 July 23rd to September 28th. The Wellcome Collection is open from 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday (but open till 10pm on Thursdays) and from 11am to 6pm on Sundays.
