Beautiful photography experiments in the time before digital at the V&A

curtis.jpgGo to the V&A and inspect some classic experiments in photography, with Curtis Moffat: Experimental Photography and Design 1923-1935.

During his life New York born Curtis Moffat (1887-1949) was married twice, studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Paris, worked with Man Ray, owned a Modernist interior design gallery shop in London's Fitzroy Square, was a pioneer in experimental photography including colour, and painted in Martha's Vineyard until his death.

Among others, he photographed Daphne du Maurier, Samuel Beckett and photographer Cecil Beaton.

Moffat's entire collection of over 1,000 photographs and photograms were donated to the V&A by Penelope Small, his daughter by second wife Kathleen Allan. These experiments or 'Rayographs' (as defined by Man Ray), are just part of this collection.

Curtis Moffat: Experimental Photography and Design 1923-1935 is in the temporary display room 38a of the V&A until Sunday 13th April 2008. The gallery is open daily 10am-5.45pm and until 10pm every Wednesday and last Friday of the month.

There's lots of time to go see it, but don't leave it too late because judging by the pictures, it's a must see.
