Monday 14th July 8pm
In the Land of the Deaf (Le pays des sourds)
A film by Nicolas Philibert
1992 99 mins
The films and methods of Nicolas Philibert, maker of Etre et Avoir and Back to Normandy, have shown him to be one of contemporary cinema's most acclaimed documentarians. In The Land of the Deaf is an elegantly spare and thoughtful portrait of the rich, diverse, but often isolated culture of the deaf community.
Introduced by Second Run's Mehelli Modi
Monday 11th August 7.30pm
Blissfully Yours (Sud sanaeha)
A film by Apichatpong Weerasethakul
2002 122 mins
From the director of Tropical Malady. Innovative and enigmatic, Blissfully Yours is a languid celebration of the pleasures of the moment. In Apichatpong's heady, sensual and playful film, a leisurely road trip and a picnic in the jungle give way to uninhibited emotion and eroticism. A meditation on happiness, superstition, politics and sexuality, Blissfully Yours confirms the reputation of one of the most distinctive new filmmakers in world cinema.
The screening will be introduced by a special guest speaker TBC.
Monday 8th September 8pm
Audition/Talent Competition (Konkurs)
A film by Milos Forman
B&W 1963 79 mins
Milos Forman's debut film launched what became known as the Czech New Wave. Made as two separate 'featurettes', but the style and themes were very similar and they were released as one film. KONKURS is important as the debut film of Mirolslav Ondricek (cinematographer of 'If' and 'Amadeus') and Ivan Passer (director of 'Intimate Lighting' and 'Cutter's Way') as well as the first work of a world-renowned director clearly showing the beginnings of the style and pre-occupations prominent in many of Forman's subsequently acclaimed films including 'Loves of a Blonde', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Amadeus'.
The screening will be introduced by a special guest speaker TBC.

BAD NEWS FROM THE ROXY - "Sadly, there really isn't such a thing as a free lunch in this town, and the bad news is that despite protests we've been forced to change our film license. All the documentary / shorts nights will remain unaffected, but the Sunday screenings and the Recent Release screenings are now a lot more expensive for us to run, so we are being forced to trial a £3 cover charge to cover some of the costs of the films on these days.
"How this will work is that when you buy food / drink, a £3 cover charge will be added to your bill for the screening and you will be given a receipt to show you've paid this. You will only need to pay this once on any day - so on Sundays you will still be getting 3 films for the princely sum of £3. This is regrettable, but unfortunately we aren't left with any other choice. There is one bit of good news though, which is that it does widen the choice of films we can play, so expect to see more classics that we haven't been able to show until now.
"We're currently trialling this system which we hope will work out - any thoughts or feedback gladly welcome, and feel free too to send any screening suggestions and we'll be happy to screen the most popular requests."
Almost every day you can catch a classic or independent film at the most relaxed cinema in town located on Borough High Street. View the screen from a comfy armchair or on a larger table with a group of friends. You can also eat and drink at the Roxy...what more could you ask for?
