Enjoy the bold work of Maria Lassnig at The Serpentine Gallery

lassnig_2.jpgThe Serpentine Gallery will this spring be hosting an exhibition from one of the most significant artists of the 20th Century.

Maria Lassnig is a significant avant-garde pioneer, whose work, over a career lasting 60 years, appears remarkably fresh and vibrant, consistently engaging with successive generations of contemporary artists.

Lassnig creates images of the body that, while figurative, reject the static tendencies of traditional portraiture. This exhibition, the first public solo presentation of her work in the UK, will include a selection of recent paintings, drawings and her work in film.

She uses bold forms and strong colours to create portraits and semi-figurative abstractions, which reject the static tendencies of traditional portraiture. The Serpentine exhibition will include the first ever showing of a selection of Lassnig's sensational fresh and vibrant oil paintings from the last three years and rarely exhibited films.

The exhibition is running from April 25th and June 8th, the gallery is open daily from 10am to 6pm.

Head down to the Serpentine Gallery for Derek Jarman Curated By Isaac Julien

jarman.jpgThe Serpentine Gallery presents a survey of one of Britain's leading filmmakers highlighting aspects of Jarman's work in film and painting.

The survey includes his pioneering presentation of the moving image within the gallery context. Julien will curate an immersive environment featuring Jarman's early experiments on Super-8 film, an installation of his film Blue, 1993, and a selection of his 'black paintings'.

The starting point for this reappraisal is Julien's new film about Jarman, produced with the support of Channel 4 and Film London.

The event runs from February 23rd to April 13th and is open daily from 10am to 6pm.
